They are intended for adults (18+) wishing to change their names because they derive from ancestors who were enslaved during the colonial past. These names were not adopted by choice but were usually imposed on the ancestor. In many cases, the names were associated with (former) slaveholders or the plantations where the ancestors worked. Persons wishing to make use of this scheme will not need to prove that the names originate from ancestors enslaved in the colonial past. A (written) declaration that such was the case will be sufficient. By means of this proposal, the government wishes to help foster social recovery and address the consequences of the Dutch slavery past. Such name changes will occur free of charge. How long they will continue to do so currently remains uncertain. A review after no more than three years will determine if there will be any continuation. A name associated with the slavery past can be changed in various ways. The following options are available:- change a number of letters in the current name;- add a prefix or suffix;- choose an entirely different surname.
